Earlier this year my husband was diagnosed with locally advanced prostate cancer. When we arrived at the Oncology Department, we initially saw Dr Nagy and Alison the Nurse specialist, both were amazing, putting us at ease straight away. Shortly afterwards, Dr Das came in to see us . We found him to be very personable, approachable and knowledgeable, which made us feel comfortable. we were both invited to ask any questions, and we never felt awkward or rushed. He's both patient and understanding and takes takes time and listens to what you say. We are told that the journey for us has just begun , but in finding Dr Das , we feel most fortunate.

When my cancer came back i was directed to Oncology and Mr Prantik Das, All the way through my treatment he explained why i had to wait before treatment until my PSA reached a point before treatment could start. I have had a video call this afternoon with Mr Das to discuss the out come of my radiotherapy treatment (vert good). My thanks to him and the oncology department. If when the Coved-19 pandemic has past if i can be of any help talking to patient about the treatment please contact me.

“Following my confirmed diagnosis with localised prostate cancer in September 2019, dealing with it was a challenge for me and my family. The encouraging thing was the cancer was considered curative by all the health professionals that I spoke to. The outcome I wanted was to get rid of the cancer with zero/negligible lasting adverse side effects to my life and relationship. I wanted the best possible outcome; the right treatment for me. But, no one would tell me what to do…………. It was not so much the diagnosis that was anxiety inducing, so much as the treatment options available, with no firm, expert recommendation which course to pursue. I was faced with a difficult decision with potentially life/lifestyle changing affects. I decided to ask and find out all I reasonably could. I wanted and sought as much information as possible to help me converge on a treatment approach and plan. I was referred to Prantik through one of his oncology colleagues at the Royal Derby Hospital. I found Prantik a breath of fresh air from our very first consultation. I immediately felt confident that I was talking to a world-class expert; someone who knew their stuff and was completely abreast of the latest techniques and developments in their field. Having been mulling and mulling the options for curative treatment (predominantly either the intrusive surgical procedure – prostatectomy and nonintrusive radiotherapy based options), I was finding it very difficult deciding on a course of action. It was discussions with Prantik that made all the difference in me moving to accepting and deciding to pursue a hormone/radiotherapy based treatment plan. Prantik listened; he encouraged me to not rush and be sure. I had keen to find out if targeted radiotherapy could achieve the same outcome as a prostatectomy, but minimising side effects to surrounding tissue and after effects. I needed and wanted to get comfortable with the decision on the way forward. Once decided with Prantik, I have never wavered. Throughout all my engagements with Prantik, I have found him incredibly intelligent, candid, clear and decisive – in recommendations, directions and advice. He’s been patient, very patient with me, but also firm and fair (and he needed to be, as a trained engineer I am high maintenance on the questioning and challenging front!) At all times, Prantik’s style and manner of working was very reassuring and put me and my wife at ease with our challenge. “I want great care” may be a strapline; I believe I have great care with Dr Prantik Das; I wanted and sought the best and I got it. I like Prantik; he’s good to work with. I believe I had world-class treatment, advice and care in all respects. Whilst my treatment plan, at this point, isn’t fully completed – one hormone injection to go - it’s not too early to say a big thank you to Prantik.” Oh, and don’t just take it from me; my wife felt very strongly that she would like to share her thoughts on Prantik, so here below is her feedback, in her words, with me as the first person: “Dr Das made a good impression in our first meeting and we were not disappointed. He was consistently professional, patient and understanding throughout the consultation process, during treatment, and in the provision of aftercare. He took time to get to know you and to engage with you as an individual and not merely as a patient. He was kind but also firm; gently guiding you through the decision-making process, providing additional information on request, engaging in discussion, but also helping you to understand the boundaries around your expectations and what you could reasonably seek to understand (without doing a degree in the subject). He was clearly highly competent in his field and was able to explain a lot of complex detail in a straightforward way. He helped you to engage in the process and to feel more confident in doing so, partly due to his demonstrable capability but also, in large part, as a result of his grounded demeanour and sensitive humour. My only criticism of Dr Das would be his time-keeping but, given my experience of him, I suspect this is due to his commitment to rightly providing his patients with fully-rounded care, so it’s a very, very minor criticism. I would like to thank Dr Das for helping us through a difficult time, for always being there when you needed him. I don’t personally think you could have made a better choice of consultant.”

Dr Das is fascinated by his subject which means he is wonderful for his patients and as keen as mustard to share his expertise without talking down to people. He relates to his patients ...and is very supportive to their relatives....in sensitive circumstances.I am sure that all helps to get the best results through personal connection and a sense of humour (essential in these cases!).He suggested a new (to UK) procedure to me right away,I had no hesitation in taking his advice and I am so pleased to have had that opportunity and to have taken it.Quite a few of my friends have been in the same position unfortunately but everyone who has seen Dr Das really likes him and rates him very highly.
